"what_to_expect": "<div>The Wala Day Tour brings together three of Malekula's most compelling cultural experiences into one unforgettable day. It's worth doing this tour before any other cultural activities in the region, as it lays the groundwork for understanding ancient village society and customs, giving you real context for everything that follows.<br><br></div><div>Your day begins with the Wala Ancient Site Tour. Depending on the weather, and if you've requested it, you'll start with a short boat trip or a paddle in a traditional outrigger canoe from Nawori Sea View Bungalows across to Wala Island. From the shore, you head into the bushy interior to explore ancient ceremonial village sites known as nasara. Here you'll visit the remains of four distinct namaki, ritualist rock formations that offer a genuine glimpse into the foundations of traditional Pacific island culture. The tour rounds off with a traditional kava ceremony, connecting you with one of Vanuatu's most enduring customs.<br><br></div><div>Next up is the Amelbati Cannibal Tour. This is one of the more historically striking experiences on offer in Malekula. You'll explore the cultural context behind cannibalism in the region, learning how it functioned as a form of sentencing within traditional society. The namaki stones here carry a formation unique to central and north Malekula, and the stories attached to them are remarkable. Stone ceremonies at this site required years of preparation, involving pigs and yams accumulated over two to three years. You'll see former cooking areas where human bones still remain, dug-out forts once used by warriors to defend their villages, and the tour ends at the chiefs' burial site, marked by skulls and conch shells. Bring mosquito repellent for this one.<br><br></div><div>The day closes with the Small Nambas cultural experience, organised by one of the last active Small Nambas kastom schools. This two-hour experience is a full village affair, with everyone taking part. You'll be welcomed with a salusalu ceremony, guided through traditional food preparation, fire-making, weaving, sand drawing, and the crafting of everyday items. Performances include the Men's Wind Dance and the Women's Flower Dance, and guests are invited to join in the public dancing finale. The tamtam rhythms and the spirit of the local people make this a genuinely moving way to end the day.</div><div><br></div><div>Transfers from Lakatoro are available at 12,000 VT (approximately 143 AUD) return. A picnic lunch (typically barbecued fish) is also included in the experience.</div>",
