From there, you settle in and get ready for what lies ahead.<br><br></div><div>The next two nights are based at Nawori Sea View Bungalows in the northeast of Malekula, and these days are packed with cultural discovery. Your first activity is the Wala Ancient Site Tour, which begins with a short boat trip across to Wala Island. Depending on the weather, and if you request it in advance, you can make this crossing by traditional outrigger canoe instead. Once on the island, you head inland through dense bush to explore ancient ceremonial grounds known as nasara, visiting the remains of four different namaki, ritualist rock formations connected to traditional ceremonies that have shaped life on this island for generations. The tour wraps up with a traditional kava ceremony.<br><br></div><div>Next comes the Amelbati Cannibal Tour, reached by a one-hour walk from the bungalows. This is a genuinely compelling historical experience that explores the practice of cannibalism in central and north Malekula, including its role as a form of sentencing and the elaborate stone ceremonies that required years of preparation involving pigs and yams. You'll see the cooking areas where human bones remain, the dug-out forts once used by warriors, and end at the chiefs' burial site marked by skulls and conch shells. Bring mosquito repellent for this one.<br><br></div><div>The third cultural experience is a Small Nambas performance, organised by one of the last Small Nambas kastom schools on the island. This two-hour immersion involves the whole village and takes you through tamtam drumming, traditional dances including the Men's Wind Dance and Women's Flower Dance, ceremonial welcomes, fire-making, weaving, sand drawing, and traditional food preparation. It is a vivid and hands-on look at the living customs of the local people.<br><br></div><div>After your time in the northeast, you transfer south to the Masklyne Islands.
