This is a real look at subsistence farming in action — identifying plants, understanding how they are used in everyday Malekula cooking, and getting hands-on with the harvest. Expect to dig up whole yams, which is every bit as muddy and entertaining as it sounds, as well as gathering coconut and the leaves needed to wrap and cook the laplap.<br><br></div><div>Back at the cooking area, you help prepare everything from scratch. You will cut the ingredients, build the laplap, and get the fire going — starting with coconut husk to catch the flame, then layering on stronger woods to build the heat. The laplap then goes in to cook for around an hour and a half, which is all part of the process.<br><br></div><div>When it is ready, the unveiling is a moment of its own. The laplap is unwrapped and finished the true Malekula way — fresh coconut milk squeezed over the top. Because of its size, laplap sosour is meant to be shared, which is why we call it Unity Food in our local language.
