"what_to_expect": "<div>The Dog's Head Trek is a two-day, two-night coast-to-coast journey through some of Malekula's most remote and rugged terrain. Crossing from inland villages to the isolated west coast, the route takes you deep into traditional territories that see very few visitors.<br><br></div><div>From the moment you set off, your experienced local guides bring the surrounding bush to life. Expect to stop regularly as they point out plants, trees, and wild fruits and nuts, often cutting them fresh with a machete for you to try on the spot. The paths are narrow and at times challenging, winding through dense rainforest and crossing rivers multiple times throughout the day. Along the way you'll pass through villages and catch glimpses of daily life in its most unfiltered form, from school children appearing along forest trails to families preparing traditional meals like laplap.<br><br></div><div>All meals are provided throughout the trek, sourced from the villages and land around you. Think fresh fish, prawns, yams, and taro served across lunch, dinner, and breakfast in different village settings. Rainwater catchments in the bush allow you to refill your water bottles as you go. We recommend bringing your own water filtration bottle if you have concerns. <br><br></div><div>Overnight, you'll stay in a village homestay, sleeping under mosquito nets and sharing space with local families. Evenings around the homestay tend to be where the real connections are made, with guides often opening up about topics ranging from environmental conservation to local politics and everyday family life.<br><br></div><div>On your first night, there's also an optional prawn fishing experience at an additional cost. Head out after dark to spear prawns by torchlight, then bring them back to be prepared for the following morning's breakfast.<br><br></div><div>The trek culminates at a remote coastal village where the road simply ends. You'll stay here in a local bungalow by the coast where you can swim, with locals pointing you to the safest spots away from strong currents and advising on the best tides before you wade in.<br><br></div><div>On the return journey, if you choose the private charter truck option, the route passes the Pialo Spirit Cave of Tanmiel, a UNESCO-listed site. A stop here is available for an additional fee and well worth considering before heading back.<br><br></div><div>Return transfers from Lakatoro are available, with drop-off options to Lakatoro itself or to Nawori Sea View Bungalows.<br><br>Be aware that the muddy, sometimes slippery underfoot conditions are part of the experience, so come prepared with solid footwear and a sense of adventure. The hiking portions of the experience are set to the pace of all the members of the group; we see this as an experience, not a race.</div>",
