The coastal setting alone sets the scene, but it's what unfolds once the drumming begins that really stays with you.<br><br></div><div>On arrival, you'll receive a briefing from your guide, who'll be with you throughout the day explaining the significance of each activity. You'll spot the chief easily by his belt. When the drums start, that's your cue to enter the grounds.<br><br></div><div>The dances come first. The men perform, then the women, then everyone together in ceremonial style around the nakamal. Each dance carries meaning. The men's dance recounts a powerful story of conflict between Rano Island and Ambram, with one dancer holding a stick representing the spirits of those taken in battle. The women perform the Reibi, or flower dance, a tribute offered to honour a new chief.<br><br></div><div>From there, you head to the kitchen, which is a small cave where the women work. Watch as yam is grated using natangora leaf, a leaf with natural spines that does the job beautifully. The grated yam is mixed with water, wrapped in leaf, and placed into bamboo to cook.<br><br></div><div>Next up is fire making. The men take the lead here and show two methods: one using wood alone, which is for everyone, and one using stone and wood, reserved solely for the chief. You're welcome to have a go yourself.<br><br></div><div>With the fire going, the women get to work cooking laplap. A coconut is cracked open and the cream squeezed through, then everything comes together. You'll get to try it served on a woven plate, and it's a genuine highlight.<br><br></div><div>Sand drawing follows, a traditional form of communication still used today. If you visit someone's home and they're out, a drawing left in the sand tells you where they've gone, whether fishing, visiting a new baby, or working in the garden.<br><br></div><div>The weaving demonstration rounds things out beautifully. You'll see palm leaf toys made for children using a technique called niro, followed by mat weaving for the home.<br><br></div><div>The day closes with a final dance where guests are invited to join in, hold hands, and share the moment with the village.
